Ever thought of running your own business?

Hidden away on the Elite Carpet Cleaning website (under the ‘Franchise Oppotunities’ tab) is a small PDF booklet called the Elite_Franchise_Proposal‘.

If you have never run your own business, but have often thought about it, in the introduction this booklet gives you some interesting statistics, some of which may encourage you and some of which may do exactly the opposite!

First the bad news – statistics not just from Australia but from developed economies around the world show that most businesses fail within the first five years of operation. The exact figures from the US Department of Commerce show that 77% of independent businesses fail within five years. This is probably no surprise to you, and many business books, such as the E-Myth by Michael Gerber, talk about the huge challenges faced by brand new businesses, where the business owner has to wear many ‘hats’ and is very unlikely to have the knowledge and experience to wear all of those hats. A common failing is where a generally very competent ‘technician’, namely someone who knows their trade very well, focuses only on this and, actively or passively, avoids other areas, such as sales and marketing, where they have fewer skills, or none.

There is some good news out of all this though. There is a way to have your cake and eat it, namely run your own business and be to a degree protected from some of the shortcomings of running a business entirely on your own, and that is taking on a franchise. The stats also back this up – data from the same US department shows that, by contrast with totally independent business startups, a whopping 92% of franchised businesses were still in business five years after setting up.

There are a few reasons for this. First and foremost a good franchise will have a tried and tested product or service and a set of processes or procedures for the business to follow, in all of the business functions, from actually doing the work – the operations – to accounting and bookkeeping, to sales and marketing. By ‘tried and tested product’, this also means one that is known by your customers – a recognised brand. This is incredibly useful, as people are much more likely to do business with a brand they know and trust than with an unknown operator.
