Who Are You Really Sleeping With?

Many people sleep with their partner each night. Others sleep with their kids and some may even sleep with their fur babies. One thing is certain, everyone likes to choose who they share their bed with!

The unfortunate thing is that most people are totally unaware of the tens of thousands of critters also sleeping in their mattress. These microscopic creepy crawlies are called dust mites and your bed is their perfect breeding ground!

So the question is, how do we evict these microscopic pests from our bed once and for all. Read on to find out more! The good news is that Elite’s qualified mattress cleaning professionals can help. Simply call 131 580 and say goodbye to dust mites for good!

A Dirty Mattress Is Perfect

These little dust mites are attracted to environments that are warm and don’t have much light. Like most of us, they tend to hang out where there’s plenty of food to munch on. Preferring rich organic material, dust mites also enjoy snacking on the dead skin cells we shed in our beds which are full of protein.

Although you wouldn’t think so, we shed nearly a kilogram of dead skin cells when we sleep every 12 months. Besides providing a rich protein meal for dust mites, dead skin cells in a bed also cause mould, bacteria and germs to grow in our mattresses. When conditions are right, it’s not uncommon for large colonies of these annoying little critters to develop within a short period of time.

Dust Mite Poo Build-Up In Your Mattress

There’s one thing worse than a bed full of dust mites, and that’s a dirty mattress full of dust mite excrement. It’s believed that a single dust mite will put out twice its body weight every day in the form of poo. Besides it being gross sleeping in a pile of dust mite excrement, this filthy substance often causes people to have allergic reactions.

The scary thing is that these droppings are composed of a strong digestive enzyme which attacks human cells. If your mattress contains large amounts of dust mite poo and you breathe it in, they can damage the sensitive cells in your trachea, bronchi and the lungs. Additionally, if you have delicate skin or conditions such as eczema, the droppings from these little creatures can make you extremely itchy or trigger a flareup.

Cleaning Your Mattress To Kill Dust Mites

There are a number of simple steps you can take to reduce the number of dust mites and their dropping in your bed. Firstly, make sure you put a mattress cover on it and this will need to be laundered frequently. By doing this, you’re reducing the amount of dead skin cells that build up on your mattress and taking away the main food source of these pesky little creatures.

Secondly, we recommend using a quality vacuum with a HEPA filter to go over your mattress regularly. If you can find one of the vacuums with a beater bar, that will be even better. Thirdly, every few months, make sure you put your mattress in direct sunlight for a few hours. The UV light from the sun has the effect of killing most of the dust mites.

Just make sure you flip your mattress around and sun both sides a couple of times. A final way you can prevent dust mites breeding uncontrollably in your mattress is to keep your bedroom windows to allow fresh air and sunlight hit your mattress. If you can get the sun to shine directly onto your bed then that’s ideal.

Professional Mattress Cleaning

If you’ve done all the above and you’re still worried about the dust mites in your bed or are getting an allergic reaction, then it’s time to call in the professionals at Elite. We have effective treatments to remove dust mite infestations and help prevent them coming back. Our expert mattress cleaners follow these steps to help you get a better night’s sleep:

  1. We begin by using our industrial strength HEPA vacuums to go over your mattress. The high suction power of this equipment is effective in removing a lot of dead skin cells, living dust mites as well as their poo.
  2. We then apply Elite’s very own proprietary Supa Santiser solution to your mattress. This professional-grade product removes excess body oils, and treats dust mites, germs, mould and bacteria. The good news is that Super Sanitiser is completely safe and smells great. It also remains active in your mattress over time preventing the re-establishment of a nasty dust mite colony.
  3. Finally, your local Elite mattress cleaning technician will apply our proprietary Supa Spotta to your mattress and pillows. This has the effect of reducing the yellow stains sometimes occurring as a result of sweating in bed and excessive body oils.

Many people ask us whether Elite staff can get rid of other stains on mattresses. The good news is, in most cases, our cleaning professionals can remove most stains. The more common ones we treat are urine stains or marks from other bodily fluids.
