Lindsay, who services Brisbane’s central and eastern suburbs, explains that while some stains can be safely treated at home, others should always be left to professionals. Before sharing what does work, he offers two real-world examples of what not to try.
Horror Story #1: Candle Wax Meets a Hot Iron
After following online advice to place brown paper over candle wax and apply a hot iron, one homeowner called Elite for help. Unfortunately, what Lindsay discovered wasn’t a stain at all, it was a permanent burn in the nylon carpet, shaped exactly like the iron.
“There was nothing any professional could do,” Lindsay explains.
A safer DIY option:
If the wax is still warm, gently scrape it off using a blunt knife. Avoid heat entirely, especially irons or hairdryers.
Horror Story #2: Salt Turns Carpet Into a Swamp
In another case, a child sleeping on a rumpus room carpet complained of being “bitten”. Online advice led the homeowner to heavily salt the area. Days later, the carpet felt spongy underfoot and left damp footprints.
The combination of salt and Queensland’s high humidity caused moisture to soak through to the underlay. Restoring the carpet required multiple sessions of professional vacuuming, hot water extraction and dry cleaning.

- Work from the outside of the stain inward
Three DIY Carpet Fixes That Actually Work
Chewing Gum (Fresh Only)
- Place an ice cube directly on the gum
- Leave for 3–4 minutes to harden
- Gently scrape away with a blunt edge
- Do not leave ice unattended, melting water can cause secondary staining
Small Blood Spots
- Use a damp (not wet) towel
- Gently blot the area
- Repeat as needed
- Keep pressure light, do not scrub
Dirty Footprints
- Vacuum loose dirt immediately
- Lightly blot remaining marks with a cloth
- Use a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 8 parts cold water
- Alternatively, use a professional spot cleaner recommended by Elite
