Each short pulse heats the thin top layer faster than the heat can travel into the material beneath. The contaminant absorbs the light and lifts away as fine dust or vapour, while clean steel or stone reflects most of it. The operator sets the power and pulse for the job so the beam stops at the surface you want to keep.
Against sandblasting or soda blasting, there is no spent media to contain, collect and dispose of, and no abrasion of the surface itself, so edges, threads, carved detail and soft brick keep their profile. Against chemical strippers there is no runoff into drains and no residue to neutralise. Against pressure washing there is no water, which matters around electrics and inside a building that is still drying out.
It is not the answer to everything. Across a large open area, such as a whole hull or a warehouse floor, blasting is faster, and a thick build-up may be quicker to take down another way first. The test patch settles which method fits.
A laser job, start to finish
Site visit and test patch. A technician looks at the surface, the contaminant and the access, and cleans a small area so you can see the result before the job is priced.
Control the area. The work zone is screened and closed to anyone not involved, because the beam is a hazard to unprotected eyes, and the lifted material is drawn off as it comes away.
The clean, in place. The operator works across the surface in passes, so plant, structure and fixtures are cleaned where they stand rather than dismantled and carted off.
Inspect and hand over. The finished surface is checked with you, ready for paint, a weld, a coating or simply to be left bare.

How does it compare with sandblasting?
Sandblasting is faster on a big, open, hard-wearing surface. Laser cleaning wins where the surface matters: nothing left behind, no abrasion, and no masking off a whole site against flying grit.
Can it be done on site without a shutdown?
The equipment is brought to the site and the work is done in place. With no water and no grit, only the area being cleaned needs to be closed off.
Is laser cleaning used after a fire?
