Grout is porous. Grease, soap scum and fine dirt soak into it, below the surface a mop can reach. Worse, a mop pushes dirty water along the floor and into the joints, where it dries and leaves the next layer. That is why grout darkens even in a home that is mopped every week.

Can badly stained grout come clean?
Most grout lightens a great deal. Stains that have soaked right through, or grout that has worn away, may not fully recover.
Can you remove mould from shower grout?
