What makes a carpet smell
Pets
Urine soaks through the pile into the backing and the underlay, where it dries into salts that smell again whenever the air turns humid. A spot that looks clean on top can still be the source.
Damp and mould
A musty smell usually means moisture: a leak, a wet spill that never dried, or a room with poor airflow. Mould growing in the backing or underlay smells stale and earthy, and it returns until the moisture is dealt with.
Smoke and cooking
Smoke particles and cooking oils settle into the fibres and hold on to their smell for a long time, especially in rooms that are closed up.
Everyday soil
Body oils, food crumbs and spilled drinks build up in heavy traffic areas. Bacteria feeding on them give a carpet a dull, sour smell.
Why powders don’t fix it
Carpet powders add fragrance and absorb a little odour from the surface, but they don’t reach the backing or the underlay. Left in the pile they can also attract more dirt. Some vinegar and bicarb mixes help with a fresh spill, but neither will shift old urine or mould.
What does work
- Find the source. A blacklight shows old urine; a damp patch or a mark on the backing shows moisture.
- Fix any leak and dry the area before anything else.
- Deep clean the carpet so the soil feeding the smell is flushed out.
- Treat the affected spots with a product made for that odour, such as an enzyme cleaner for urine.
- Dry the carpet quickly, with windows open or fans running.
Where urine has soaked deep into the underlay, a section of underlay may need replacing; no surface treatment reaches it.

Carpet odour questions
Why does my carpet smell worse after cleaning?
Usually because it stayed wet too long, or the water reached old urine in the underlay. Fast drying and treating the source avoid it.
Does carpet deodoriser powder work?
It freshens the surface briefly. It doesn’t remove what is causing the smell.
How do I get rid of a musty carpet smell?
Find and fix the moisture first, then clean and dry the carpet properly. Without that, the smell comes back.
