What a blocked gutter actually does
A gutter is built to carry water to a downpipe. Once leaves settle in it, they hold water, rot down to sludge and slow the flow. In a heavy downpour the gutter fills faster than it drains and spills over the front, or worse, back over the inside edge into the eaves and the roof space.
Downpipes usually block first. Debris washes to the outlet, catches, and packs tight. The gutter above then sits full even on a dry day.
Signs you can spot from the ground:
- water pouring over the gutter edge during rain
- plants or grass growing out of the gutter line
- stains or peeling paint on the fascia and eaves
- a downpipe that drips long after the rain stops, or barely runs at all
Dry leaves sitting in a gutter are also fuel in fire season.
How the job runs
- The quote is based on the number of storeys, the length of gutter and how easy the roof is to reach.

- Gutters and valleys are vacuumed and cleared by hand, and the debris is bagged and taken away.
