Most contaminated properties were never labs. Smoking methamphetamine indoors leaves residue on walls, ceilings, soft furnishings and air-conditioning that stays for years. You can’t see or smell it at the levels that matter, which is why testing is the only way to know.
Results are compared with the Australian remediation guideline for homes, 0.5 micrograms per 100 square centimetres.
How the job runs
- Swabs are taken from set surface areas in each room and analysed through NATA-accredited laboratory partners.
- If results are under the guideline, no decontamination is needed.
- If they are over, the affected rooms set the scope.
- Carpet, underlay, curtains and soft furnishings that hold residue are removed.
- Walls, ceilings, floors and fixtures are washed, and air-conditioning is cleaned.
- The property is retested to confirm it is below the guideline.

Meth testing questions
Can I clean meth residue myself?
Household cleaning doesn’t reliably bring residue below the guideline, and porous items usually need to go. Test first.
Is meth residue only from manufacture?
No. Smoking is the most common source, and it can put a property over the guideline.
What gets removed during decontamination?
Usually carpet, underlay, curtains and soft furnishings in the affected rooms, since they hold residue.
Is it covered by insurance?
