Why panels need cleaning at all
Rain does less than people hope. It moves loose dust around, then dries and leaves a film behind. Droppings, pollen and the grime from nearby roads stay put, and anything that shades part of a panel cuts what that panel produces.
The right way to clean a panel
Solar glass carries a coating that helps it take in light, and the panels are sealed units on a roof. Cleaning them is about getting the dirt off without marking either.
- Deionised water, which dries without leaving the mineral spots tap water does.
- Soft brushes, so the glass and its coating are not scratched.
- No detergent left behind to attract fresh dust.
- No high pressure, which can force water past seals and frames.
A garden hose and a broom do neither job well. Tap water leaves spots, and a stiff bristle scratches.
