How to Remove Grease or Oil Stains From Carpet

Grease and oil stains are among the most stubborn marks you can get on carpet. Whether it’s cooking oil, mechanical grease or food-related spills, these stains tend to cling tightly to carpet fibres and spread quickly if handled incorrectly.

If you act fast and follow the right steps, you may be able to reduce the damage before professional help arrives.

What You’ll Need

  • Paper towel or clean white cotton cloth
  • Dry cleaning fluid (such as white spirit)
  • Clean water
  • Wool detergent (for example, Softly)
  • White vinegar
  • A phone (just in case the stain doesn’t shift)

Step-by-Step Grease and Oil Stain Removal

  1. Remove excess residue first
    Gently blot or carefully scrape away as much of the grease or oil as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the carpet fibres.
  2. Apply dry cleaning fluid sparingly
    Lightly apply a small amount of dry cleaning fluid to the affected area. Blot gently using a clean white cloth until no more oil transfers onto the towel. Take care not to over-wet the carpet.
  3. Prepare a gentle cleaning solution
    Mix one cup of water with a teaspoon of wool detergent and a teaspoon of vinegar. Dab the solution onto the stain, then blot from the outside edge toward the centre to prevent spreading.
  4. Rinse and dry
    Sponge the area with cold water and blot dry with a clean white cloth or paper towel. To speed up drying, direct airflow over the area using a fan.
