Why your mattress could be making you sick
When was the last time you cleaned your mattress?
No, not the sheets: we mean the mattress … although changing sheets is another story altogether (TIME reported one UK study indicating young single men changed their sheets once every three months!)
At Elite Carpet Dry Cleaning, we’re not prying into who you sleep with; whether that person is a blanket hog, a dribbler or a snorer. We are concerned that the mattress you are sleeping on is hygienic and healthy because its health can affect yours.
Despite our name, Elite’s cleaning professionals do so much more than carpet cleaning. We offer specialist mattress cleaning too.
The secret life of germs….
In his book The Secret Life of Germs, noted New York microbiology professor Dr Philip Tierno wrote: “There is no single place that challenges a person more immunologically than the mattress and pillow combination”.
He rated the bedroom the “second germiest place in the home” after the kitchen.
Unless you have a brand-spanking new mattress, the likelihood is you are hosting thousands – millions – of microscopic organisms in your bed: fungi, bacteria and dust mites.
And let’s not forget protein stains from sweat, blood, urine and semen. Or the splash of tea that spilt from your morning cuppa in bed. Or the deposits left by your dog or cat after curling up on your bed.
Then there’s the skin cells we shed naturally while sleeping. The average mattress can contain more than 1kg of dead skin flakes which are a great food source for microscopic mattress-dwelling mites.
All of these can contribute to allergies, asthma, eczema and fatigue.
And we’re not even talking about bed bugs in this blog!
So given that we spend about one-third of our lives in bed, why don’t we think about mattress hygiene? Imagine what our clothes would look like if we wore them, day and night, for one-third of our lives without ever being thoroughly cleaned!
What’s involved in a professional mattress clean?
Elite Carpet Dry Cleaning operations manager Tim Honan says having a quality mattress protector under the bottom sheet is a good start but it’s only part of the solution.
“That protector creates a barrier but, like the sheets, it needs regular washing too,” Tim says.
“When you call Elite in to clean your mattress, we’ll undertake a pre-inspection before commencing a thorough dry vacuum using a HEPA filter. Not all vacuums have this filter – it captures the tiniest of particles whereas most home vacuums will simply re-distribute them into the atmosphere.
“We then pre-spray the mattress and use a specialised extractor to remove embedded soils and grease.”
A lightly scented deodoriser and anti-microbial spray is applied only at the customer’s request.
