Head west from Brisbane towards Toowoomba, keep driving another 246 kilometres, and you’ll arrive in Goondiwindi. The town’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “the resting place of birds” and today it’s home to just under 6,000 people. Surrounded by rich agricultural land, Goondiwindi experiences classic country extremes, scorching summer days climbing above 34°C and crisp winter mornings dipping to around 6°C.
Each February, this quiet rural town bursts into life as athletes roll in for the iconic Hell of the West Triathlon. Competitors tackle a demanding 2km swim, an 80km cycle and a 20km run. According to the event organisers, it’s “not for the faint-hearted”, with murky river waters and the relentless heat of a Goondiwindi summer pushing athletes to their limits.

Of course, country living has its rewards too. Away from city lights, Goondiwindi offers spectacular night skies, allowing Greg to indulge his passion for astronomy. With several telescopes, including an impressive 16-inch model requiring a stepladder to operate, he spends clear nights exploring planets, meteor showers and distant galaxies. From his own backyard, he’s even spotted the polar ice caps on Mars.
