What happens at the surface

Laser Cleaning in Sydney: What happens at the surface

Rust, paint and soot absorb the laser’s light strongly; bare metal and sound masonry reflect much of it. Each pulse lasts a tiny fraction of a second, long enough to break the top layer away and too short to heat what lies under it. Tuning the beam to the coating and the substrate is the operator’s skill.

The comparison that matters is sandblasting. Blasting is quick on a large, tough surface, but it scours that surface and leaves spent grit to contain and remove. Chemical strippers need neutralising and washing off. The laser leaves neither, though it is slower across big open areas, which is weighed up before any work starts.

From first look to handover

  1. Assess. A technician sees the job, the coating or corrosion, and how to get at it.
  2. Test. A small patch is cleaned so the finish and the pace are known before the price.
  3. Set up. The area is screened and kept clear, since the beam can damage unprotected eyes, and extraction takes away what the laser lifts.
  4. Clean and check. The surface is worked in passes where it stands, then inspected with you, ready to recoat, weld or leave bare.

Sydney laser cleaning questions

Can the laser take graffiti off brick?

Yes. It removes the paint without wearing the brick face, which matters on older walls that wouldn’t survive a blast.

Does a shop or workshop have to close?

Usually only the screened area around the work is closed, because there is no grit or spray to drift.

Is it part of fire restoration?

It can be. Soot on steel, brick and timber comes off with the laser, and Elite’s fire and smoke restoration follows IICRC S700 for the rest of the property.
