If you have kids, you know just how many carpet stains you have to deal with. And every kid enjoys getting out the crayons or markers to colour in.  Crayons are especially popular with young children but unfortunately, their motor skills haven’t fully developed and this means some of the crayons may end up on your carpets. So, what’s the best way to remove crayon stains from your floor coverings? In this article, we’ll go through a few options for you to try to remove those nasty crayon marks from your carpets.

If you Google “Remove crayon stains from my carpet”, you’re sure to find lots of results. However, over our years of operations, Elite Carpet Dry Cleaning has dealt with literally hundreds of crayon stains. Our professional carpet technicians have tried and tested the following methods to remove crayons from your carpet so you can rest assured in the knowledge that the following stain removal tricks get results.

Required Equipment:

  1. Isocol or other rubbing alcohol
  2. WD-40
  3. Tap water
  4. Gloves
  5. Butter knife or spoon
  6. Dishwashing detergent
  7. Clean cloth
  8. Vacuum cleaner
  9. Elite Supa Spotta

Out of the below options, our professional carpet cleaners recommend the Supa Spotta method as it was the most effective in getting rid of the crayon stains and colour left behind. If using the rubbing alcohol method, you may find some light crayon colour stains may be left behind.

1. Use Elite Supa Spotta

The first and best method for removing crayon stains from your carpet is Elite’s proprietary Supa Spotta carpet treatment. Available from our online store, this effective product is a sure fire way to remove crayon marks. Simply spray on a good amount of Supa Spotta then wait 10 minutes and dab at the stain with a clean white cloth. Magic will happen before your eyes as the crayon stains disappear quickly without leaving a trace behind. Why not go to www.elite.com.au now and purchase your very own bottle of Supa Spotta and say goodbye to a wide variety of otherwise difficult to remove carpet stains. Not only is Supa Spotta great for use on carpets, you can also use it to remove stubborn stains from drapes, upholstery, tiles, sinks, walls, painted surfaces, appliances, clothing and car interiors.

2. Use Rubbing Alcohol

This method uses a rubbing alcohol such as Isocol to break down the crayon and dissolve it. Although it is effective, it may not remove all traces of colour, especially on white carpets.

Method:

  • Pour a little rubbing alcohol onto the crayon stain
  • Wait half an hour for the rubbing alcohol to soak into the crayon marks
  • Use clean white cloths to pad the crayon stain in a circular movement
  • Put additional isocol onto a clean part of your cloth then keep dabbing the crayon stain
  • Keep doing the same action using clean parts of the cloth until the crayon stain has been removed
  • When as much crayon colour as possible has been extracted, clean the mark with either clean tap water or dishwashing liquid
  • Finally, let the affected area dry in the air

3. Use WD-40

This method is actually the second most preferred tactic of our local carpet cleaners and may also get good results.

Method:

  • Get your can of WD-40 and hold it about 10cm away from the stain and spray to cover the crayon mark
  • Wait 5 – 10 minutes
  • Use a clean white rag to tap the crayon stain in a circular action
  • Spray more WD-40 onto a new section of the cloth then keep tapping the stain
  • Keep on dabbing the stain until it has disappeared. Although this method can take quite a while, it is very effective and you’ll eventually see the crayon stain vanish
  • When as much crayon colour as possible has been extracted, clean the mark with either clean tap water or dishwashing liquid
  • Finally, let the affected area dry in the air

4. Use a Butter Knife to Scrape

This method is the simplest but will often not get as good a result as the other two methods. However, it’s worth mentioning here for the record.

  • Using a butter knife or spoon, scrape the crayon pieces up out of the carpet.
  • Once that’s done, vacuum the area to suck up crayon shavings

Important Notes:

  1. It’s extremely important to test for discolouration in a small out of sight area of your carpet prior to applying rubbing alcohol or WD-40 to any bigger, more obvious areas.
  2. Whenever you have removed a stain or mark from your carpet, you should groom it by using your fingers to lift and separate the fibres of the pile. Not only does this make it more difficult to notice a stain, it also helps shorten the drying time.
  3. The professional carpet technicians at Elite do not recommend using a hot iron to get rid of crayon stains or indeed any stains. Using this sort of heat on your carpets is very risky and can quite easily leave terrible burn marks on your carpet.

The Final Word

We thought we’d leave the final word to the world’s most well-known crayon company – Crayola. If anyone knows as much about removing crayon stains from carpets as we do, it’s the actual makers of most of the world’s crayons. This is their recommended method:

  • Remove as much crayon as possible using a flat blade knife
  • Spray the remaining crayon stain with WD-40 and give it 5 – 10 minutes
  • Use a stiff bristle brush to loosen the crayon stain
  • Dab with paper towel
  • Reapply WD-40 then put on dishwashing detergent and work with the brush
  • Dab the remaining mark with a slightly wet sponge
  • For crayon stains that still remain, simply repeat the above process
