From printing newspapers to cleaning carpets.
Darren Greer, Elite Townsville franchisee, is Townsville born and bred, and took over the business from his father twelve years ago (2002). The business in fact prides itself as a family business that has been operating in the area since 1988, and, as well as the city of Townsville itself, the business services the Burdekin area and neighbouring towns like Ingham and Charters Towers.
Before taking over the business, Darren worked in the newspaper printing industry for many years, taking a break for five years to help his father with the carpet cleaning business until he had an accident that stopped him from being able to do the work. He subsequently went back into printing, but, no longer enjoying the shiftwork, jumped at the chance of running his own business and took on the Elite franchise.
Although Elite has many residential customers, the business has quite a strong commercial focus, working for retailers, offices and schools. The commercial work has its own challenges, being mainly after hours and some of the carpets in retail outlets can take a real pounding from high foot traffic, so need extra ‘grunt’ to get them clean, but Elite Townsville is geared up for this sort of work.
They also specialise in carpet dry cleaning, which is particularly useful in office locations, where the lack of residue and quick drying times compared to steam cleaning allow carpets to be walked within an hour of being treated.
“One of the trends we’ve noticed in the past few years is the move from regular or seasonal carpet cleaning to ‘on spec’ work.” says Darren. “Where people used to plan to get their carpets cleaned regularly every year, now it’s more common for us to get a call from someone who needs their carpets cleaned that day. With our team of four operators, we’re generally able to do a job at very short notice, and often the same day we get the call.”
When he’s not busy making sure the population of Townsville have clean carpets and upholstery, Darren enjoys outdoor pursuits, anything from camping to waterskiing to riding motorbikes. In fact, anything that gets him dirty.
A little bit of info on Townsville
Did you know… that Townsville is the largest urban centre in Queensland north of the Sunshine Coast (with a population of around 190,000) and is considered the unoffficial capital of North Queensland?
It is named after Robert Towns, who was ‘in town’ once and for only three days back in 1866, but thanks to his ongoing financial assistance, Townsville was named after him in the same year. It is now home to manufacturing and processing industries as well as James Cook University, plus has a thriving tourism industry.
