Grout is porous. Dirt and soap scum soak in, a mop spreads dirty water into the joints, and each layer dries on top of the last. Glazed tiles look fine while the grout between them turns grey.
Natural stone such as marble and travertine is acid-sensitive and is treated accordingly, with acidic products kept away.
