Moss holds moisture against the roof, and lichen grips the surface as it grows. Blasting either off with high pressure does damage of its own:
Terracotta tiles carry a glaze. Strip it and the tile turns porous, holds water and grows back faster.
Cement and concrete tiles rely on a surface coating that high pressure wears away just as quickly.
Colorbond and other metal roofs have a factory finish that harsh chemicals and a hard jet can both damage.
A soft wash kills the growth with a cleaning solution and rinses it away at low pressure.
